1. get the wrong idea

- All I need it for some jerk to catch me carrying this book around and get the wrong idea.
- I think he made a mistake, but don't get the wrong idea, I still think he has done a good job overall.
2. for the record
+ something that you say before you tell someone something important that you want them to remember
- Let me just say for the record that I think middle school is the dumbest idea ever invented.
- And, just for the record, we were never any more than good friends.
- For the record, I received no payment for the work.
3. growth spurt
+ a period when a child's height rapidly increases.
- You got kids like me who haven't hit their growth spurt yet mixed in with these gorillas who need to shave twice a day.
4. plunk
+ If you plunk something somewhere, you put it there without great care.
- You walk into the classroom and just plunk your stuff down on any old desk.
5. what's up with
+ used to say that you do not understand something, or to ask for an explanation of something
- I don't know what is up with girls thesedays.
6. get credit for
+ to be given praise, approval, or honour for something you have done
- But of course now I don't get any credit for sticking with the girls all this time.
- He doesn't get enough credit for the fact that he's a winner.
7. scramble for
+ to struggle eagerly or unceremoniously for possession of something.
- Bryce is the most popular kid in our grade, so that leaves all the rest of guys scrambling for the other spots.
- scramble for front seats.
- players scrambling for the ball.
8. hovering
+ to float in the air without moving in any direction.
- Rowley who is probably hovering right around the 150 mark.
9. sneak off
+ leave furtively and stealthily
- The first thing I did when I got outside was sneak off to the basketball court to see if the Cheese was still there.
원래는 새로운 시리즈를 시작하려고 했으나 왠지 1권부터 다시 시작하고 싶었다. 모든 표현을 다 익히고 아예 외우는 지경에 이르면 다음 시리즈를 볼 때도 아는 표현들이 많아질 거라 생각했기 때문이다. 그런데 10페이지를 읽는 동안에도 모르는 구동사들이 왜 이리 많은 건지.. 그래서 오늘은 공부하는데 시간이 꽤 오래 걸렸다. 영영사전으로 찾아봐도 사전 설명에도 모르는 단어가 많으니... 영어는 왜 이렇게 끝도 없는 걸까.
하지만 계속 input을 넣을 것이고, 이제는 구동사를 사용한 예문도 만들어보려고 한다. 독서카드에 써놓고 계속 확인하고 외워야지. 반복만이 살 길이라고 생각한다. 내가 그 구동사로 하고 싶은 말을 만들어 볼 것이다.
